THE MONK WHO SAVED THE MIDDLE AGES FROM CRISIS

Cinemavixion Review

This beautifully shot investigative documentary journeys across Europe, tracing the remarkable path of the sixth-century Irish monk Columbanus. In an era of continental fragmentation following Rome's collapse, Columbanus and his disciples established over a hundred centers of learning and spiritual devotion. More than mere missionaries, they were architects of Europe's nascent intellectual landscape. Their monasteries served as precursors to universities, fostering literacy, preserving knowledge, and even challenging the authority of kings and popes. The film adeptly uncovers the profound and often overlooked legacy of this intrepid outsider, drawing compelling parallels between his achievements and the challenges facing contemporary Europe. It's an illuminating exploration of resilience, faith, and the enduring power of scholarship in shaping civilization.
