THE MISTRESS

Cinemavixion Review

Greg Pritikin's 'The Mistress' plunges viewers into a chilling narrative steeped in domestic dread and spectral echoes. The film masterfully intertwines the unsettling discovery of century-old letters by newlyweds with the tragic tale of a past resident, creating a palpable atmosphere of unease. John Magaro and Chasten Harmon deliver compelling performances as the couple navigating the unsettling history of their new home, their initial joy slowly eroding under the weight of the past. Pritikin, who also penned the script, crafts a slow-burn horror that relies on psychological tension and a pervasive sense of foreboding rather than jump scares. While the Rotten Tomatoes score suggests a divided critical reception, the film's commitment to its dark, atmospheric storytelling and its exploration of lingering trauma makes it a noteworthy entry for those who appreciate a more cerebral and unsettling cinematic experience. The narrative's deliberate pacing allows the dread to accumulate, offering a haunting reflection on love, loss, and the secrets that homes can keep.
