THE LAST HAREM

Cinemavixion Review

Sergio Garrone's "The Last Harem" offers a fascinating, albeit dated, glimpse into a world of unexpected cultural clashes and personal discovery. The film follows Laura, a glamorous photographic model, whose life takes a dramatic turn when she falls for and marries Almalarik, the oil minister of a Middle Eastern emirate. Corinne Cléry delivers a compelling performance as Laura, navigating the initial allure of a whirlwind romance only to confront the stark reality of her husband's existing family structure upon arrival. The narrative provocatively explores themes of love, tradition, and the compromises inherent in cross-cultural unions. While the film's 1981 origins are evident in its style, it remains an intriguing character study, prompting reflection on societal expectations and the complexities of adapting to unfamiliar circumstances. The supporting cast, including George Lazenby and Daniela Poggi, adds depth to Laura's challenging new environment.
