THE KILLER RESERVED NINE SEATS

Cinemavixion Review

Giuseppe Bennati's "The Killer Reserved Nine Seats" is a giallo that, while perhaps not reaching the dizzying heights of the genre's masters, offers a compellingly intricate mystery steeped in familial curses and theatrical dread. Set in Italy, the film unfolds around Patrick Davenant, an Englishman of old nobility who, on his birthday, invites a group of guests to explore a long-shuttered family theater. This act of morbid curiosity unleashes a chain of horrifying events, as the guests find themselves trapped within the decaying walls, becoming pawns in a series of ritualistic murders orchestrated by Patrick, seemingly driven by a centuries-old curse. The plot, penned by Biagio Proietti, Paolo Levi, and Bennati himself, weaves a complex tapestry of relationships and secrets, as the invited party—including Patrick's sister Rebecca, her friend Doris, Lynn and her boyfriend Duncan, Viviana and her husband Dr. Dalbert, and starlet Kim with her lover Russel—become entangled in the unfolding tragedy. Rosanna Schiaffino, Chris Avram, and Eva Czemerys anchor the cast, bringing a palpable sense of unease to their roles. While the film may not boast the visual flair of some of its contemporaries, its atmospheric tension and convoluted narrative provide a satisfyingly dark and suspenseful experience for fans of classic Italian thrillers.
