THE JOE LOUIS STORY

Cinemavixion Review

Robert Gordon's "The Joe Louis Story" offers a compelling glimpse into the life of the legendary boxer, charting his remarkable career and his struggles against both opponents in the ring and the pervasive racism outside of it. Starring Coley Wallace as the titular champ, the film is bolstered by strong supporting performances from Paul Stewart and Hilda Simms. A significant draw for boxing aficionados, the biopic thoughtfully integrates actual fight footage, showcasing Louis's iconic bouts against formidable adversaries like Max Baer, Jimmy Braddock, and Primo Carnera. This blend of biographical narrative and archival sports history makes for an engaging and historically significant cinematic experience, even if its critical reception and box office performance were modest upon its 1953 release.
