THE INCOHERENTS

Cinemavixion Review

Jared Barel's "The Incoherents" offers a poignant, albeit familiar, exploration of midlife ennui through the unlikely reunion of a '90s indie rock band. Anchored by a capable cast including Annette O'Toole, Margaret Anne Florence, and Amy Carlson, the film delves into the personal slumps that propel four forty-somethings back to their musical roots. While the narrative treads ground often covered in tales of dashed dreams and second chances, the ensemble's chemistry and the nostalgic backdrop of their shared past provide a compelling throughline. The film, which garnered 4 wins and 5 nominations, captures the bittersweet reality of confronting one's younger aspirations against the backdrop of present-day disappointments. "The Incoherents" may not reinvent the genre, but it serves as a relatable and often touching character study for anyone who has ever wondered 'what if?'
