Richard Whorf's "The Groom Wore Spurs" offers a charming, if somewhat predictable, romp through the early days of Hollywood and the Wild West mythos. Ginger Rogers, stepping into a role that could have easily been overshadowed, imbues attorney Abigail Furnival with a sharp wit and pragmatic resilience, serving as the perfect foil to Jack Carson's delightfully inept singing cowboy, Ben Castle. Carson’s performance is the film's comedic engine, portraying a man whose bravado crumbles at the first sign of genuine peril, a far cry from the rugged heroes he pretends to be. The plot, which sees Abigail reluctantly entangled in Ben's debt-ridden life and a subsequent murder investigation, is elevated by the chemistry between the leads and a script that deftly balances romantic comedy with lighthearted mystery. While the film may not boast the critical accolades of some of its contemporaries, it remains a testament to the enduring appeal of well-executed screwball comedy and the magnetic presence of its stars.
