THE GREAT RETREAT: WHY EMPEROR HADRIAN STOPPED THE ROMAN EXPANSION

Cinemavixion Review

This documentary offers a compelling look at Emperor Hadrian's pivotal decision to halt Roman expansion, a move that fundamentally reshaped the empire. Examining the context of 117 AD, it posits that Hadrian's strategic genius lay not in conquest, but in consolidation. The film delves into his administrative reforms and the monumental task of securing the empire's vast borders, symbolized by the iconic Hadrian's Wall. It presents a nuanced portrait of an emperor whose pragmatic approach, though perhaps less glamorous than conquest, may have been instrumental in preserving Roman dominance for centuries. A thought-provoking exploration of leadership and strategic foresight.
