THE GANGSTER'S DAUGHTER

Cinemavixion Review

Mei-Juin Chen's "The Gangster's Daughter" (2017) presents a compelling, albeit familiar, narrative of familial estrangement and the allure of a dangerous lifestyle. The film centers on a young woman forced into the orbit of her estranged father, a figure entrenched in the Taipei underworld. As she grapples with her mother's death, she finds herself drawn to his illicit world, setting the stage for inevitable conflict and moral reckoning. The performances, particularly from Ally Chiu and Jack Kao, anchor the emotional core of the story, navigating the complexities of a father-daughter relationship strained by circumstance and criminality. While the film may tread well-worn thematic ground, its Taiwanese setting and specific cultural nuances offer a fresh perspective. It's a drama that probes the cyclical nature of crime and the difficult choices individuals make when caught between loyalty and a desire for a different life. "The Gangster's Daughter" is a solid entry in the crime drama genre, recommended for those interested in character-driven stories set against a backdrop of organized crime.
