THE FOUNDERS

Cinemavixion Review

Charlene Fisk and Carrie Schrader's 2016 documentary, "The Founders," masterfully recounts the inspiring journey of the thirteen pioneering women who established the Ladies Professional Golf Association. Far from being groomed for athletic careers, these women defied societal expectations and immense odds to create the longest-running women's professional sports organization in the world. The film highlights their dual role as fierce competitors and shrewd businesswomen, as they pooled their own resources to organize tournaments and market themselves in an era that questioned their place in professional sports. Through a blend of archival footage and compelling narrative, "The Founders" showcases their unyielding love for the game and their determination to be compensated for their talents, just as their male counterparts were. The documentary not only celebrates their individual personalities and athletic prowess but also emphasizes their collective effort in breaking down barriers and establishing a lasting legacy. With a reported 80% on Rotten Tomatoes and a 7.3/10 on IMDb, this film is a powerful testament to perseverance, gender equality, and the enduring spirit of sportsmanship, making it a must-watch for enthusiasts of golf, women's history, and inspirational stories.
