THE FINAL 19

Cinemavixion Review

"The Final 19" emerges as a poignant and deeply personal documentary, chronicling the harrowing true story of Sgt. Dan Hefel, one of the last American POWs to return from the Vietnam War. Directed by Tim Breitbach, the film masterfully interweaves Hefel's harrowing experiences as an infantry grunt and later as a POW after his helicopter crashed in the notorious A Shau Valley, with the emotional journey of his family back home. This dual perspective offers a rare and intimate look at the profound impact of war, not just on the soldiers who fought it, but on the loved ones who waited, often in agonizing uncertainty. The narrative highlights Hefel's courageous enlistment, following in the footsteps of his nine brothers, and his resilience in the face of unimaginable adversity. "The Final 19" serves as a powerful testament to the silenced voices of many soldiers, offering a deeply human account of bravery, sacrifice, and the enduring strength of the human spirit amidst the brutal realities of conflict.
