THE FIGHT FOR JUSTICE: WOMEN IMPRISONED FOR SELF-DEFENCE | THE PERFECT VICTIM | REAL CRIME

Cinemavixion Review

This documentary, 'The Fight for Justice: Women Imprisoned For Self-Defence,' plunges into the harrowing realities faced by three women in Missouri's prison system. For over three decades, they have served sentences for acts of self-defense against abusive husbands, their pleas tragically unheard due to legal systems that failed to acknowledge the pervasive impact of abuse. The narrative powerfully illustrates how outdated stereotypes and sensationalized media coverage overshadowed the truth of their experiences. A pivotal shift occurred around 2000 with evolving legal understanding of "battered woman syndrome," prompting a review of their cases. However, the film highlights the ongoing struggle against a secretive parole board, revealing a second layer of victimization. The women's fight to be recognized not as "The Perfect Victim" but as survivors is a compelling testament to resilience against systemic injustice.
