THE FAMILIAR

Cinemavixion Review

Miles Hanon's "The Familiar" delves into the unsettling territory of spiritual manipulation, presenting a chilling narrative centered on Sam, a lonely gunsmith haunted by grief. The film masterfully portrays Sam's internal struggle, amplified by the re-emergence of his estranged sister-in-law, Laura, who becomes the vessel for a malevolent entity named Rallo. The performances, particularly Bryan Massey as Sam and Laura Spencer as Laura, anchor the film's emotional core, exploring themes of faith, forgiveness, and the insidious nature of possession. While Sam's attraction to Laura initially clouds his judgment, the escalating supernatural threat forces him to confront his own bitterness and choose between his soul and Laura's life. "The Familiar" is a compelling, albeit dark, exploration of spiritual warfare that resonates with its intimate focus on personal redemption amidst external terror.
