THE FABULOUS DORSEYS

Cinemavixion Review

Alfred E. Green's "The Fabulous Dorseys" offers a spirited biographical journey through the illustrious careers of jazz titans Tommy and Jimmy Dorsey. Playing themselves, the brothers' musical prowess is the undeniable centerpiece, showcasing iconic tunes like "I'm Getting Sentimental Over You" and "Marie." The film thoughtfully chronicles their rise from humble beginnings, guided by a father's musical insistence, to their individual and collective triumphs. Beyond the titular duo, the movie serves as a delightful time capsule, featuring cameos from legendary figures such as Paul Whiteman and the incomparable Art Tatum. A special jam session, uniting the Dorseys with Tatum, is a particular highlight, perfectly capturing the infectious energy and swing of a bygone era. While the narrative occasionally leans into whimsy, the sheer quality of the music and the authentic performances make this a must-watch for jazz aficionados and lovers of classic Hollywood musicals alike.
