THE FABULOUS DORSEYS

Cinemavixion Review

Alfred E. Green's "The Fabulous Dorseys" is a spirited biographical musical that allows legendary bandleaders Tommy and Jimmy Dorsey to portray themselves, charting their rise from humble beginnings to celebrated success. The film serves as a vibrant showcase for their iconic music, featuring beloved tunes like 'I'm Getting Sentimental Over You' and 'Marie'. Beyond the titular brothers, the movie offers a delightful glimpse into the golden age of swing, with notable cameos from jazz greats such as pianist Art Tatum and bandleader Paul Whiteman. The inclusion of a special jam session with the Dorseys and Tatum is a particular highlight for any aficionado of the era. While perhaps more a celebration of the musicians than a deep dive into their personal lives, "The Fabulous Dorseys" remains a perfect snapshot of a time when music truly swung, offering an enjoyable experience for both jazz buffs and casual viewers alike.
