THE DUKE IS TOPS

Cinemavixion Review

Released in 1938, "The Duke Is Tops" is a compelling drama that delves into the sacrifices made for artistic ambition. The film centers on a theatrical producer who, despite his own burgeoning success, chooses to champion the career of a gifted singer. The narrative, enriched by details from external data, unfolds the story of Duke Davis and his sweetheart Ethel. Duke invests his savings to back Ethel's singing career on the T.O.B.A. circuit. When a New York talent scout offers Ethel a solo contract, Duke, in a poignant act of selflessness, writes a fake check for $5000, pretending to have sold Ethel's contract. Heartbroken but driven, Ethel accepts and becomes a sensation in New York. However, her initial success falters under a poorly conceived show. Meanwhile, Duke's own ventures also fail without Ethel. He finds temporary success with a medicine show, but his true loyalty lies with Ethel. Hearing of her misfortune, he abandons his earnings to return to her side. The film beautifully portrays Duke's unwavering support, culminating in his efforts to rebuild Ethel's career by incorporating elements of his successful medicine show into a new production. Starring the iconic Lena Horne, "The Duke Is Tops" is a testament to love, sacrifice, and the pursuit of dreams in the often-unforgiving world of entertainment.
