THE DEVIL BAT

Cinemavixion Review

Jean Yarbrough's 1940 horror flick, "The Devil Bat," plunges viewers into a world of mad science and vengeful folly. Bela Lugosi delivers a chilling performance as Dr. Carruthers, a scientist betrayed by his employers and driven to a diabolical revenge. Carruthers crafts a diabolical plan, utilizing genetically enlarged bats, imbued with a murderous rage triggered by a specific perfume, to exact his retribution on his former associates. The film's premise, while outlandish, taps into classic B-movie thrills, offering a unique blend of the macabre and the sensational. Despite its modest production values, "The Devil Bat" has garnered a cult following, with critics noting its effective atmosphere and Lugosi's compelling presence. The film's reception, while mixed, often highlights its entertainment value as a prime example of pre-code horror, with a Rotten Tomatoes score of 60% reflecting this appreciation for its campy yet effective storytelling.
