THE DESERTER

Cinemavixion Review

Burt Kennedy's "The Deserter" plunges into the grim aftermath of frontier conflict, exploring the brutal consequences of perceived betrayal. John Huston, Richard Crenna, Chuck Connors, and Bekim Fehmiu anchor a narrative that follows a young cavalry lieutenant's descent into vigilantism after a devastating Apache attack. Fueled by a potent mix of grief and disillusionment with the Army's protective failures, his quest for vengeance becomes a dark mirror to the violence he seeks to avenge. The film unflinchingly examines the moral complexities of the era, questioning the thin line between justice and savagery. Kennedy masterfully crafts a stark portrayal of a man consumed by loss, delivering a powerful, albeit somber, cinematic experience that resonates with the harsh realities of the American West.
