Steven Schachter's "The Deal" offers a meta-cinematic romp through the often-absurd world of Hollywood production. Anchored by a wonderfully weary performance from William H. Macy as a producer facing financial ruin, the film cleverly intertwines the making of a biopic about Benjamin Disraeli with a surprisingly engaging caper. Meg Ryan brings a spark to her role as a creative executive, and LL Cool J adds a charismatic presence as the action star whose kidnapping throws the entire production into chaos. While the film may not delve deeply into Disraeli's politics, it excels as a witty commentary on the compromises and convoluted schemes required to get a movie made. The narrative, co-written by Macy himself, balances humor with a genuine sense of stakes, making "The Deal" an enjoyable, if light, exploration of the creative process under duress.
