THE DARK WEB

Cinemavixion Review

This documentary series delves into the unsettling underbelly of the digital world, exposing how pervasive online platforms can be exploited for nefarious purposes. It sheds light on the disturbing invention of sextortion, pioneered by Maria Caparas in the Philippines, who built a lucrative blackmail empire through recording explicit online chats. The series further explores the shadowy realm of dark web marketplaces, where illicit goods like drugs, weapons, and counterfeit documents are traded anonymously using cryptocurrencies. The rise and fall of AlphaBay, once the largest such marketplace, is highlighted as an example of the immense profits and eventual downfall of those operating in this hidden economy. Through gripping narratives, the documentary reveals the hidden actors who misuse social media and communication apps, leading to serious consequences including exploitation, scams, and even suicides. It serves as a stark reminder of the dual nature of technology, capable of both connection and immense harm.
