THE CRIMES OF STEPHEN HAWKE

Cinemavixion Review

George King's "The Crimes of Stephen Hawke" plunges viewers into the shadowy underbelly of 1800s London, presenting a dual portrait of a respectable moneylender and a terrifying vigilante known as the Spine Breaker. Tod Slaughter delivers a chilling performance, embodying the sinister duality that terrorizes the city. The film masterfully blends period atmosphere with a gripping crime narrative, where the police appear perpetually outmaneuvered by the escalating brutality. While the plot unfolds with a certain theatricality, it remains a compelling study of obsession and the darkness lurking beneath a veneer of respectability. This British thriller is a fascinating glimpse into a bygone era of cinematic horror and crime drama, offering a potent dose of macabre entertainment.
