Arthur Ripley's "The Chase" (1946) plunges viewers into a taut, atmospheric film-noir that masterfully builds suspense. The narrative follows Chuck Scott, a veteran who finds himself ensnared in a dangerous web of deceit after taking a job as a chauffeur for a menacing gangster. Robert Cummings delivers a compelling performance as the increasingly desperate Scott, caught between his employer's volatile nature and the allure of his captive wife, Lorna, portrayed with palpable fear by Michèle Morgan. Steve Cochran is chilling as the ruthless Eddie Roman, embodying the film's pervasive sense of threat.
