THE CHALLENGE

Cinemavixion Review

Milton Rosmer's 1938 film, "The Challenge," offers a gripping dramatization of the perilous ascent of the Matterhorn. Set against the dramatic backdrop of 1865, the narrative pits former rivals, the Italian Carrel and the Englishman Whymper, against each other and the formidable mountain itself. The film excels in its realistic and well-photographed climbing sequences, vividly capturing the inherent dangers of mountaineering. While the initial race for the summit provides ample tension, the story wisely explores the lingering consequences and perils that follow the triumphant climb, adding a layer of psychological depth. Starring Robert Douglas, Frank Birch, and Geoffrey Wardwell, "The Challenge" is a testament to human ambition and the unforgiving power of nature, making it a compelling watch for adventure and history enthusiasts alike.
