THE CARSON CITY KID
Cinemavixion Review
Joseph Kane's "The Carson City Kid" (1940) is a solid entry into the Roy Rogers Western canon, offering a familiar tale of vengeance wrapped in the iconic charm of the "King of the Cowboys." Rogers portrays a character named Roy Rogers, a man driven by the loss of his younger brother to seek out Morgan Reynolds, the saloon owner responsible for his death. Posing as the titular "Carson City Kid," Rogers embarks on a quest that earns him a reputation as a stagecoach robber, though his true intentions are far nobler. The narrative skillfully weaves a plot of mistaken identity, with Rogers' actions inadvertently leading to Laramie (Francis McDonald), his outlaw companion, being captured as the "Kid." The film further enriches its Western tapestry with the introduction of Pauline Moore as Joby Madison, a saloon singer who captures Roy's heart, and a compelling performance from Bob Steele as the villainous Morgan Reynolds, also known as "Lee Jessup." George 'Gabby' Hayes also lends his dependable support as Sheriff Gabby Whittaker, rounding out a cast that delivers a satisfyingly traditional Western experience. While not a groundbreaking film, "The Carson City Kid" excels in its straightforward storytelling and the undeniable screen presence of Roy Rogers, making it an enjoyable watch for fans of the genre.
