THE BULLDOG BREED

Cinemavixion Review

Robert Asher's "The Bulldog Breed" offers a charmingly optimistic, albeit slapstick, portrayal of British resilience and ingenuity in the face of personal and professional adversity. Norman Wisdom, in his signature bumbling persona, embodies Norman Puckle, a grocer's assistant whose romantic rejections and general ineptitude lead him to the Royal Navy. The film cleverly pivots from domestic comedy to a nascent sci-fi premise, with Puckle unexpectedly chosen for a pioneering rocket mission. Wisdom's physical comedy remains the film's cornerstone, providing ample laughs as Puckle navigates naval life and the rigors of astronaut training with his unique brand of chaos. While the plot may seem quaint by modern standards, the film’s enduring appeal lies in its wholesome humor and the endearing spirit of its protagonist, a testament to Wisdom's enduring comedic legacy.
