THE BROTHER FROM ANOTHER PLANET

Cinemavixion Review

John Sayles' "The Brother from Another Planet" is a singular cinematic experience, blending science fiction with a poignant allegory for the immigrant and Black experience in America. Joe Morton delivers a remarkably nuanced performance as the mute extraterrestrial, conveying profound emotion through physicality alone. The film masterfully uses its sci-fi premise to explore themes of otherness, community, and adaptation within the vibrant backdrop of Harlem. While the narrative follows the Brother's attempts to integrate and evade bounty hunters from his home planet, it's the subtle observations on human nature and societal structures that resonate most deeply. With critical acclaim, including a strong showing on Rotten Tomatoes, and a memorable box office performance, this 1984 gem stands as a testament to Sayles' unique vision and Morton's captivating presence.
