THE BARRENS

Cinemavixion Review

Darren Lynn Bousman's "The Barrens" plunges viewers into the eerie folklore of the New Jersey Pine Barrens, weaving a tale of a family camping trip that descends into psychological dread. Starring Stephen Moyer as Richard, a father determined to reconnect with his family, the film quickly shifts from a potentially cathartic ritual to a harrowing ordeal. As rumors of the mythical Jersey Devil surface and unsettling events, including animal mutilations, plague their campsite, the family's bonds are tested. Moyer delivers a compelling performance, oscillating between a man grappling with personal demons and a potential victim of the encroaching darkness. The film masterfully blurs the lines between superstition and sanity, leaving audiences questioning whether the true horror lies in the ancient legend or within the human psyche. While not a mainstream blockbuster, "The Barrens" offers a tense and atmospheric horror experience for those drawn to its dark, unsettling narrative.
