THE BARRENS

Cinemavixion Review

Darren Lynn Bousman's "The Barrens" plunges viewers into the dense, foreboding Pine Barrens of New Jersey, a landscape steeped in the chilling legend of the Jersey Devil. This 2012 horror offering, starring Stephen Moyer as a father grappling with personal demons while on a camping trip, masterfully uses its setting to amplify the psychological dread. Moyer delivers a compelling performance, anchoring the film with a palpable sense of unease as his family becomes entangled in a series of unsettling events. The narrative cleverly blurs the line between folklore and reality, keeping the audience guessing whether the true terror lies in the mythical creature or the human psyche. While the film may not boast widespread critical acclaim, its atmospheric tension and commitment to its spooky premise make it a worthy watch for fans of creature features and folk horror who appreciate a descent into primal fear.
