THE 4TH

Cinemavixion Review

Andre Hyland's 2016 directorial debut, "The 4th," presents a darkly comedic, yet frustratingly relatable, descent into a day gone awry. The film, penned by Hyland himself, stars the director alongside Anna Lee Lawson and Yasmine Kittles. It chronicles Jamie's increasingly calamitous attempts to retrieve lighter fluid for a 4th of July barbecue, a seemingly simple errand that spirals into a chain reaction of bad luck and poor decisions. Hyland masterfully crafts a narrative where minor inconveniences escalate into existential crises, amplified by Jamie's precarious financial situation and his roommate's prized bicycle. While the film has garnered nominations, its reception, as indicated by a 50% score on Rotten Tomatoes and a 4.9/10 on IMDb, suggests a divisive, though certainly memorable, viewing experience. "The 4th" serves as a potent, if bleak, reminder of how quickly a day can unravel when Murphy's Law takes hold.
