SUMMER TEMPTATIONS

Cinemavixion Review

Piero Vivarelli's "Summer Temptations" (1988) plunges viewers into the stifling atmosphere of an isolated island villa, where simmering resentments and unspoken desires come to a boil. The film centers on Vanessa, a young widow who invites her former lover, Roberto, to tutor her stepdaughters. This setup, while seemingly benign, quickly unravels into a charged exploration of familial obligation, past romance, and the complex dynamics between women vying for control and affection. The performances, particularly from Moana Pozzi, Marino Masé, and Petra Scharbach, navigate the delicate balance between vulnerability and manipulation, creating a palpable tension. Vivarelli masterfully uses the opulent yet claustrophobic setting to amplify the psychological drama, making "Summer Temptations" a compelling, albeit unsettling, study of human relationships under duress. Its narrative weaves a cautionary tale, inviting audiences to contemplate the enduring power of temptation and the often-fraught nature of intimacy.
