SUMMER ’03

Cinemavixion Review

Becca Gleason's directorial debut, 'Summer '03,' offers a poignant and often humorous exploration of familial secrets and adolescent awakening. Joey King delivers a compelling performance as the 16-year-old protagonist navigating the tumultuous aftermath of her grandmother's deathbed revelations. The film masterfully balances moments of genuine emotional weight with sharp, witty dialogue, capturing the awkwardness and intensity of teenage life intertwined with adult complexities. Supported by a strong ensemble cast including Paul Scheer and Andrea Savage, Gleason crafts a narrative that feels both specific and universally relatable. Despite its modest box office performance and mixed critical reception, 'Summer '03' stands out as a thoughtful character study, resonating with its honest portrayal of how hidden truths can redefine relationships and self-discovery.
