SUGAR!

Cinemavixion Review

Shari Berman's "Sugar!" offers a compelling narrative about confronting midlife inertia and chasing deferred dreams. Alice Ripley delivers a standout performance as Leslie, a devoted housewife and piano teacher who, in her fifties, decides to finally embrace her passion for rock 'n' roll. This audacious decision, as expected, sends ripples through her family life, particularly impacting her husband, a Republican candidate for U.S. Senate, and her college-bound daughter. The film beautifully explores the tension between personal fulfillment and societal expectations, portraying Leslie's journey with both humor and heart. While the film may not have garnered widespread accolades, Ripley's powerful portrayal and the relatable theme of reinvention make "Sugar!" a noteworthy watch for anyone contemplating a significant life change.
