STONEHEARST ASYLUM

Cinemavixion Review

Brad Anderson's 'Stonehearst Asylum' is a gothic thriller that masterfully blends psychological unease with chilling revelations. Set against the backdrop of a 19th-century mental institution, the film plunges viewers into a world where the line between healer and patient blurs into a disturbing abyss. Jim Sturgess delivers a compelling performance as the earnest Dr. Newgate, whose initial idealism is shattered by the asylum's dark secrets. Kate Beckinsale offers a nuanced portrayal of Eliza Graves, a patient whose enigmatic presence draws Newgate deeper into the institution's machinations. The film’s atmospheric tension, bolstered by a strong supporting cast and Edgar Allan Poe's thematic influence, makes for a thought-provoking exploration of sanity and control. While it garnered a mixed reception, its stylish direction and unsettling narrative offer a captivating cinematic experience for those drawn to dark mysteries.
