Cinemavixion Review

David Mackenzie's "Spread" offers a provocative, albeit uneven, exploration of male vanity and transactional relationships in the sun-drenched, superficial landscape of Los Angeles. Ashton Kutcher stars as Nikki, a gigolo whose charm and sexual prowess allow him to live a life of leisure, supported by a string of wealthy, older women. The film, co-written by Jason Hall and Paul Kolsby, delves into the moral ambiguity of Nikki's existence, questioning whether his carefully constructed world can withstand genuine connection. Kutcher, in a departure from his more typical comedic roles, delivers a performance that oscillates between slick confidence and a surprising vulnerability. He is ably supported by Anne Heche as Samantha, one of his benefactors, and Margarita Levieva as Heather, a waitress who disrupts Nikki's carefully managed life. While the film attempts to dissect the complexities of intimacy and self-worth in a world driven by appearances, its narrative occasionally falters, leaning into predictable territory. The critical reception was mixed, with a Rotten Tomatoes score of 22%, reflecting a sentiment that the film's premise, while intriguing, was not fully realized. Despite its flaws, "Spread" remains a noteworthy, if somewhat shallow, examination of modern relationships and the price of emotional detachment, with a runtime of 97 minutes.
