SPOOKS RUN WILD

Cinemavixion Review

Phil Rosen's "Spooks Run Wild" offers a curious blend of juvenile delinquency and gothic horror, leaning heavily into the comedic potential of its premise. The film pits a group of wayward youths against the eerie backdrop of a supposedly haunted mansion, masterfully inhabited by the iconic Bela Lugosi. The narrative, while simple, effectively builds a sense of suspense and mystery, punctuated by moments of unexpected fright and slapstick humor. Lugosi's performance anchors the film, bringing his signature gravitas to a role that oscillates between menace and potential victim. The supporting cast, particularly Leo Gorcey and Bobby Jordan, injects youthful energy and wisecracking dialogue, creating a dynamic contrast with the shadowy atmosphere. While perhaps not a landmark of either genre, "Spooks Run Wild" succeeds as an entertaining B-movie, showcasing a unique collaboration between horror legend Lugosi and the East Side Kids, making it a worthwhile watch for fans of vintage genre cinema.
