In a rain-slicked, perpetually flooded London of 2008, Tony Maylam's 'Split Second' plunges us into a gritty neo-noir detective tale that crescendos into a creature feature. Rutger Hauer delivers a typically intense performance as Harley Stone, a haunted detective relentlessly pursuing a killer who has already claimed his partner. The film masterfully blends atmospheric world-building, depicting a society submerged by ecological disaster, with a high-octane, if occasionally campy, alien hunt. While the visual effects and some narrative beats betray their early 90s origins, the film's commitment to its bleak, cyberpunk-infused vision and Hauer's commanding presence make it a compelling watch.
