Brian T. Jaynes's "Spirit Riders" (2015) offers a heartfelt, albeit familiar, narrative centered on redemption and the transformative power of horses. The film follows Kacie Lewis, a rebellious teenager grappling with grief and anger after a personal tragedy. Her sentence to an equine therapy camp, Spirit Riders, initially clashes with her defiant spirit. However, through her work with Blaze, a spirited thoroughbred struggling with his own past, Kacie finds an unexpected connection. Guided by the ranch's stern but wise owner, Rex (portrayed with gruff gravitas), Kacie not only helps re-train Blaze but also embarks on her own journey of healing, learning to confront her past and embrace forgiveness. While the plot treads well-worn paths of teen angst and animal companionship, the performances, particularly from the Davidson family in key roles, and the underlying message of hope provide a touching experience for family audiences.
