SPEAK EASILY
Cinemavixion Review
Buster Keaton, in one of his later solo efforts, stars as Professor Post in "Speak Easily," a charming 1932 comedy directed by Edward Sedgwick. The film masterfully blends Keaton's signature deadpan delivery with the boisterous energy of Jimmy Durante. Professor Post, a sheltered academic, is thrust into the dazzling, and often deceptive, world of Broadway after a supposed inheritance. The narrative cleverly explores the clash between intellectualism and show business, as the professor's naive idealism is tested by the machinations of a spoiled actress and the realities of the entertainment industry. Keaton's physical comedy, though perhaps less slapstick than in his silent era, remains impeccable, providing genuine moments of amusement as his character navigates this unfamiliar territory. The supporting cast, particularly Ruth Selwyn as the ingénue Pansy Peets and Thelma Todd as the calculating Eleanor Espere, adds depth to the romantic and comedic entanglements. "Speak Easily" is a delightful reminder of Keaton's enduring talent and a witty commentary on ambition and authenticity.
