SOUNDER

Cinemavixion Review

Martin Ritt's "Sounder" is a poignant and enduring cinematic achievement, offering a powerful portrayal of resilience within the Black sharecropper community during the Great Depression. Cicely Tyson delivers a performance of profound dignity and strength as Rebecca Morgan, anchoring the family through immense hardship. Paul Winfield is equally compelling as her husband, Nathan Lee. The film masterfully captures the coming-of-age journey of their son, brilliantly embodied by Kevin Hooks, as he navigates the harsh realities of injustice and the unwavering bonds of family. Based on William H. Armstrong's novel and earning critical acclaim with an Oscar-nominated status and a 91% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, "Sounder" is a deeply humanistic drama that resonates with its unflinching honesty and its celebration of the enduring spirit. Its themes of hope and perseverance make it a vital watch.
