Joseph Kane's "Song of Texas" from 1943 offers a charming slice of Golden Age Western entertainment, anchored by the ever-reliable Roy Rogers and his iconic steed, Trigger. The narrative, penned by Winston Miller, centers on a well-intentioned fib: former rodeo star Sam Bennett (played by Rogers in a dual role, though his character is distinct from the one who owns the ranch) has led his daughter, Sue, to believe he still owns a vast ranch. When Sue decides to visit, Rogers' character steps in to help his friend by having him pose as the ranch owner. Sheila Ryan portrays Sue, whose impending visit introduces a delightful complication when she becomes involved in a business deal to sell half the ranch, unaware of the underlying pretense. The film adeptly balances its musical numbers and lighthearted moments with the unfolding dramatic tension of the deception. While perhaps not a groundbreaking Western, "Song of Texas" delivers a wholesome story with the signature Roy Rogers appeal, making it a pleasant watch for fans of classic Hollywood musicals and Westerns.
