Andrew V. McLaglen's "Something Big" offers a sprawling, ambitious Western narrative set against the rugged backdrop of the New Mexico Territory. Dean Martin stars as Joe Baker, a charismatic bandit yearning for one last grand score before his past catches up with him in the form of his fiancée, Dover McBride. The film expertly weaves together Baker's desperate schemes with the stoic resolve of Colonel Morgan, played with gruff charm by Brian Keith, whose own life is upended by Baker's actions. The plot, rich with double-crosses and unexpected alliances, explores themes of ambition, redemption, and the complexities of honor in a lawless land. Martin delivers a performance that balances swagger with a touch of weariness, while Keith provides a grounded counterpoint. Though perhaps overstuffed with subplots, "Something Big" remains an engaging entry in the Western genre, bolstered by its strong performances and McLaglen's confident direction.
