SMOTHER!

Cinemavixion Review

Vince Di Meglio's 2008 comedy "Smother!" presents a relatable, albeit exaggerated, scenario of familial intrusion. Starring Diane Keaton, Dax Shepard, and Liv Tyler, the film delves into the chaotic life of Noah Cooper (Shepard), who finds his already strained existence amplified when his overbearing mother, Marilyn (Keaton), moves in with him and his wife Claire (Tyler). The premise promises a comedic exploration of personal boundaries, marital stress, and the challenges of career setbacks, all seen through the lens of Noah's increasingly suffocating home life. While the film garnered a mixed reception, with a Rotten Tomatoes score of 38% and a Metacritic score of 36/100, it offers a particular brand of humor that leans into awkward situations and slapstick, aiming to deliver heartwarming moments and life lessons amidst the mayhem. Keaton's performance as the intrusive matriarch is central to the film's comedic engine, providing a dynamic that Shepard's character must navigate. "Smother!" is a testament to the enduring, and often overwhelming, ties of family, wrapped in a digestible comedic package.
