SMITTY

Cinemavixion Review

David Mickey Evans's 2012 film "Smitty" offers a heartwarming, albeit familiar, tale of a troubled youth finding redemption through an unlikely summer on a rural farm. The narrative centers on Ben, a thirteen-year-old city dweller whose penchant for mischief lands him in the care of his estranged grandfather, Jack, in Iowa. The plot, which unfolds with predictable yet satisfying beats, sees Ben initially resistant to his new surroundings, only to gradually open up thanks to the companionship of a shelter dog and the kindness of a neighbor. Peter Fonda delivers a grounded performance as the stoic grandfather, while Brandon Tyler Russell effectively portrays Ben's transformation. Though "Smitty" may not break new ground in the coming-of-age genre, its earnest exploration of themes like friendship, family, and responsibility, bolstered by a solid cast and a touching storyline, makes it a worthwhile watch for families seeking a gentle, character-driven drama. The film, which received 3 wins and 1 nomination, holds a 5.4 rating on IMDb, reflecting its modest but positive reception.
