SMITTY

Cinemavixion Review

David Mickey Evans' "Smitty" offers a poignant, albeit familiar, narrative arc centered on a troubled urban youth's transformative summer. The film deftly navigates the complexities of familial estrangement and the unexpected solace found in the countryside. Young Brandon Tyler Russell delivers a compelling performance as Ben, a teenager whose rebellious spirit gradually yields to the quiet wisdom imparted by his grandfather, played with gruff warmth by the legendary Peter Fonda. The introduction of a canine companion serves as a charming catalyst for Ben's emotional growth, underscoring themes of responsibility and the profound impact of unconditional friendship. While "Smitty" may tread well-worn paths in its coming-of-age story, its heartfelt execution and strong performances, particularly from its lead actors, make it a worthy exploration of redemption and the enduring bonds of family. The film's simple yet effective storytelling, bolstered by its rural Iowa setting, provides a gentle reminder of life's fundamental lessons.
