SMITTY

Cinemavixion Review

David Mickey Evans' "Smitty" offers a heartwarming, if familiar, tale of adolescent redirection. The film centers on a troubled thirteen-year-old whose summer in rural Iowa, under the watchful eye of his grandfather and the unwavering companionship of a stray dog, becomes a crucible for personal growth. Brandon Tyler Russell capably navigates the character's journey from brash city kid to a more understanding individual, while Peter Fonda brings a quiet gravitas to the grandfather role. The narrative, enriched by the presence of a lovable canine, effectively explores themes of friendship, family bonds, and the often-unseen lessons found in responsibility. While not groundbreaking, "Smitty" delivers a sincere and family-friendly message, bolstered by solid performances and a gentle, evocative direction that makes its Iowa setting feel both authentic and transformative.
