SMART PEOPLE

Cinemavixion Review

This 2008 dramedy, 'Smart People,' directed by Noam Murro, offers a refreshingly complex look at the intellectual elite grappling with messy human emotions. Dennis Quaid delivers a nuanced performance as Lawrence Wetherhold, a misanthropic professor whose carefully constructed intellectual world begins to unravel. The film skillfully explores themes of familial estrangement, midlife ennui, and the unexpected places where connection can be found. Sarah Jessica Parker shines as a former student who dares to breach Lawrence's emotional fortress, while Thomas Haden Church provides a compelling, if flawed, counterpoint as his brother. Despite a mixed critical reception, 'Smart People' is a thoughtful exploration of how even the most intelligent individuals can struggle with life's fundamental challenges, making it a worthwhile watch for those who appreciate character-driven narratives.
