SHORTWAVE

Cinemavixion Review

Ryan Gregory Phillips' 2016 film "Shortwave" is a masterclass in atmospheric dread, weaving a taut psychological thriller from the enigmatic origins of shortwave radio frequencies. The narrative centers on Josh and Isabel Harris, a couple grappling with profound loss who retreat to a remote research facility. Their lives take a disquieting turn when Josh and his colleague, Thomas, decipher a mysterious shortwave signal, a discovery that seems to deeply affect Isabel. Her ensuing visions and experiences blur the line between hallucination and a sinister external influence, raising profound questions about perception and the unseen forces that may surround us. While the film garnered 11 wins and 5 nominations, its critical reception, as reflected by an IMDb rating of 3.9/10, suggests a polarizing viewing experience. "Shortwave" is an unnerving exploration of grief, obsession, and the terrifying possibility that some discoveries are best left undisturbed, making it a compelling watch for those who appreciate suspenseful, thought-provoking cinema.
