SHORT TERM 12

Cinemavixion Review

Destin Daniel Cretton's 'Short Term 12' is a poignant and deeply affecting drama that masterfully explores the complexities of adolescence and the profound impact of human connection within the confines of a residential treatment facility. Anchored by a career-defining performance from Brie Larson as the dedicated supervisor Grace, the film eschews melodrama for a raw, authentic portrayal of both the struggles and resilience of its young charges and the equally vulnerable staff who guide them. Cretton, who also wrote the screenplay, imbues the narrative with a remarkable sensitivity, drawing from his own experiences to create characters that feel startlingly real. The ensemble cast, including John Gallagher Jr. as Grace's boyfriend and co-worker, and a breakout turn from Kaitlyn Dever as a new, challenging resident, deliver performances of exceptional depth. The film doesn't shy away from the harsh realities these teenagers face, yet it consistently finds glimmers of hope and humanity. Acclaimed by critics, 'Short Term 12' garnered widespread praise for its emotional honesty and nuanced storytelling, earning numerous accolades. Its intimate scope and powerful character work resonate long after the credits roll, making it a standout piece of independent cinema that deserves discovery.
