SHE'S THE ELDEST

Cinemavixion Review

Cate Jones's "She's the Eldest" is a poignant exploration of familial bonds frayed by time and mystery. The film follows three estranged siblings as they return to their ancestral home, a setting steeped in the unresolved enigma of their parents' disappearance. What unfolds is less a conventional mystery and more an introspective journey into the labyrinth of memory, trauma, and the often-uncomfortable truths that lie dormant within family histories. The narrative masterfully weaves together moments of subtle humor with profound emotional depth, as the siblings' quest for answers unearths buried secrets and long-suppressed memories. Jones, who also stars in the film, directs with a sensitive hand, eliciting strong performances from Mary Buss and Mickey Reece. While the film delves into dark themes, it ultimately offers a compelling meditation on reconciliation and the enduring, albeit complicated, ties that bind us. With "She's the Eldest," Jones crafts a compelling, character-driven drama that resonates long after the credits roll.
