SECRET SCRIPTURE

Cinemavixion Review

Jim Sheridan's "The Secret Scripture" is a poignant and visually arresting exploration of memory, faith, and the enduring power of the human spirit. Based on Sebastian Barry's acclaimed novel, the film delves into the life of Roseanne McNulty, an elderly woman residing in a psychiatric institution, whose past unfolds through her meticulously annotated Bible. Rooney Mara delivers a captivating performance as the younger Roseanne, portraying her with a potent blend of vulnerability and defiance. The narrative, which spans decades, masterfully interweaves Roseanne's tumultuous personal history—marked by forbidden love and societal constraints—with her present-day confinement. Sheridan employs a rich visual palette, contrasting the starkness of the institution with the vibrant, yet often tragic, recollections of her youth. While the film garnered a mixed reception, with critics noting its ambitious scope, its emotional resonance and Mara's central performance make "The Secret Scripture" a compelling study of a life lived against the odds, inviting audiences to ponder the subjective nature of truth and the sanctity of personal narrative.
